“Building from the first stroke.” As the academic year began, the RBAIBC opened for another term, beginning a new rowing season marked with sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication. Our first term has been mainly dominated by returning to the rhythm of training from the summer and introducing new members to the workings of the club.
This year, we have introduced a new training system, splitting members into Recreational and Development crews. The program is designed to provide training tailored to each member’s category of current fitness level, with opportunities to develop and reach their full potential. The coaching staff have worked to design sessions that balance technical drills and endurance pieces. Weekly land training has supported our water session efforts by focusing on strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. These sessions have promoted personal growth, enhanced sportsmanship, and helped each athlete set and achieve individual goals. The positive attitude displayed by all rowers has made the learning process enjoyable and rewarding.
The club committee has been working closely with coaches and the School, identifying areas for improvement and helping to create a safe and inclusive environment in the boathouse. Their efforts, often taking place behind the scenes, ensure the club’s daily operations run smoothly and that the needs of all members are considered. By actively seeking feedback and collaborating on new initiatives, the committee plays a key role in maintaining the positive environment that allows both athletes and coaches to succeed.
Our development crew has spent much of the first term in the 1st VIII, building on their technical aspects on the water and power & endurance sessions in the gym and on rowing machines. The crew’s progress has been evident not only in race results but also in their technique and confidence. Competition for our crews began with the Lagan Autumn Head of the River, where the 1st VIII set the fastest junior crew time in race 1 and finished 17th out of 71 crews of all ages. At Queen’s University Head of the River, the team demonstrated strong race strategies and worked collectively to finish ahead of several strong university crews. Our Senior coxed IV won their category ahead of Trinity College Dublin in race 2, a respected outcome for a junior crew in such a competitive field.
The Recreational squad has been coached by Mr Warnock, who has worked closely with the new Year 11s to help them adjust and settle into the structured training routines. These younger athletes have benefited through encouragement from the older members as they learn the fundamentals of the sport and adapt to the expectations of club life. In addition, our Junior Captains have played a crucial role; not only supporting and inspiring their younger teammates, but also setting a positive example through their commitment, leadership, and approachability. Their willingness to offer advice, answer questions, and foster a sense of belonging has made a noticeable difference in the integration of new members, helping to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and motivated to improve.
Further successes of the club should also be noted, with four RBAI pupils being selected to join Rowing Ireland’s Talent Identification scheme, partnered with Queen’s University. It is excellent to see such talent and potential emerging from within our own club, reflecting both the hard work of these individuals and the supportive environment cultivated at the Boat Club. Achievements like these not only raise the club’s profile but also inspire younger athletes, showing what is possible through dedication and teamwork. We take genuine pride in seeing our rowers recognised at this level.
We now look ahead to the spring and summer racing season, filled with more opportunities for competitive racing and chances to improve as a club. The first event is Lagan Head, being held this Saturday, 7th February, with the race starting from the Albert Bridge (and racing upstream to Queen’s University Boat House) with a start time of 11 am.
