Well-Being at RBAI

Dr Martin Seligman is the man behind the PERMA-V model on which key aspects of our Well-Being programme are based.

The PERMA-V framework and its corresponding values underpin our programme of activities on well-being helping our pupils to develop:

1. Positive emotions

Having the ability to remain optimistic and to view the circumstances that life presents us in a way that is constructive and positive, for example, coming into school with a sense of pride, being able to identify what makes learning fun, being resilient in face of difficulties.

2. Engagement

When we are actively engaged in doing something that we enjoy, we become absorbed and gain focus, for example, developing positive friendships with boys who have the same interests, participating as a member of a team, having an interest in a subject.

3. Relationships

The quality of the relationships we form with others around us is vital in helping us live a life filled with well-being and positive energy, for example, boys can develop a collegial network though the House system and act with integrity towards others.

4. Meaning

We have to feel that our actions are valuable; that we are contributing to something bigger than just ourselves, for example, getting the best from life at Inst both inside and outside of the classroom and demonstrating loyalty to school.

5. Achievement

It is important to set realistic and achievable goals, for example, in academic and co-curricular life of the school. Achieving these goals, will increase feelings of self-confidence, self-reliance and overall well-being.

6. Vitality

In order for pupils to perform at their best, it is important to have a well-balanced and healthy diet, to lead an active lifestyle and to have good quality sleep patterns.

Pupils have opportunity to explore well-being topics and activities through:

  • The CCEA Curriculum
  • CEIAG Provision
  • Personal Development Programme
  • React Programme in PE and Games
  • External Agency Presentations
  • Well-Being Days
  • Co-Curricular Activities

  • Mature as learners and acquire wider skills and dispositions
  • Demonstrate collective responsibility for work and behaviour
  • Build Resilience
