Business Studies provides pupils with a unique insight into the world of work. Through its study, pupils discover how businesses operate and learn about their key elements and essential business functions.
It offers as an excellent foundation for those wishing to pursue careers in management, marketing, project management, business accounting, management consultancy, human resources, and business journalism as well as those interested in continuing to further study.
GCSE Business Studies follows the CCEA GCSE curriculum which is assessed through both examinations and controlled assessments.
In Year 11, the unit is divided into three sections: Creating a Business, Marketing and Business Operations. We usually complete the Unit 1 module exam in the summer of Year 11 and this accounts for 40% of the overall GCSE.
In Year 12, pupils examine recruitment and selection practices and analyse the importance of a business having motivated and well-trained employees. They identify the signs of business success and failure and evaluate the different ways in which businesses grow. Pupils also learn about business finance. This exam is also worth 40%
Controlled Assessment takes place in Year 12 – this involves a research project followed by a one hour exam and accounts for 20% of the GCSE.
The CCEA A-Level Business Studies course contributes to an understanding of business and enterprise and helps pupils develop many of the skills and attitudes required for employment.
This course can give valuable preparation for any career, not just in business and finance. Pupils develop skills such as research, decision-making, problem-solving and evaluation of information. These skills will assist pupils in any career path that they choose to follow
Pupils complete 2 AS units followed by 2 A2 units and all units are assessed through examinations. There is no coursework.
Pupils within the department consistently perform above the Northern Ireland average. In recent years 75+% of pupils have achieved GCSE and A level grades A*, A or B.
The Business Studies Department works closely with Young Enterprise and is proud to have been recognised as a Centre of Excellence by Young Enterprise. This prestigious designation acknowledges the school’s exceptional commitment to equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
Throughout the year numerous competitions and seminars give boys the chance to delve further into the world of business and what it means to be entrepreneurial.
