There is an Eco Committee made up of pupils from various year groups, with Nathan Cooke as Chairman, Adam Bowler as Secretary and Robin Gorman as Treasurer. A pupil-led Environmental Review led to the development of our Eco Code acronym RESPECT, which ties in with the addition of this term in the school strapline. Throughout the year we will be looking at making our own compost, how to grow potatoes, wildlife surveys and so much more! We are planning a trip to Belfast Lough RSPB Reserve in June.
Additionally, the school is aiming to complete the Green Flag Award. Our main topic is on Marine life, with the school’s proximity to the coast, providing an ideal focus. A strong maritime tradition made this a perfect choice, with the seahorse symbol and links to shipbuilding through Lord Pirrie. Outdoor Learning and Healthy Living are our minor topics. These tie in with the school-wide focus on Wellbeing & PERMAV, alongside the use of our many green spaces within a city centre location. We have previously achieved a Silver Award in our topic areas of Waste, Litter and Biodiversity.
