Why study Foreign Languages?

Studying a Modern Language opens a world of opportunities for pupils, both academically and personally. In today’s interconnected global community, proficiency in the languages we offer is not just an academic asset but a crucial skill for navigating the world. By learning a new language, pupils gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, fostering empathy and global awareness. This ability to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries not only enhances life experiences but also prepares pupils for a range of careers in international business, diplomacy, education, and far beyond.

Moreover, research shows that any knowledge of a Modern Language significantly improves cognitive abilities and academic performance, as well as strengthening problem-solving skills, memory, and multitasking, while also enhancing literacy in English. Language study encourages critical thinking and adaptability, traits which are highly valued in today’s fast-paced, global job market. By choosing to study a modern foreign language, pupils are not only equipping themselves with essential communication skills but also preparing for a future where they can thrive in a multicultural, multilingual world.

What Modern Foreign Languages offers?

Key Stage 3

  • At Key Stage 3 pupils follow the ¡Viva! Textbook and online material in Spanish covering topics which include personal description, free time, school, family and friends and town.
  • In French, we use Dynamo with Stimmt used in German.
  • These online course books are supplemented by the universally celebrated interactive language website Linguascope.
  • The boys are actively encouraged to use these websites in and outside school which allows them to develop their ICT skills in tandem with consolidating their language knowledge.
  • Online homework is also a key feature of Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 4

  • Pupils can also opt to study either Spanish, French or German for GCSE.
  • Pupils follow the CCEA specification in all three languages.
  • The MFL GCSE courses encourage boys to broaden their linguistic knowledge within the four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Beyond the Classroom

RBAI is delighted to have been re-accredited with the highly prestigious International School Award from the British Council which recognises the school’s contribution to global education, with pupil learning at its core.  This award recognises the work undertaken with its international partner schools, as well as the international elements embedded across the curriculum.

The department is a huge supporter of the European Day of Languages and are enthusiastic in our support of it each year.  Tutor Groups across Key Stage 3 participate in a European Quiz, developing their knowledge of the rich linguistic and cultural diversity emanating from our European neighbours.
