Technology and Design is an integral subject within the Science and Technology Learning Area of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. It is primarily hands-on, with a strong emphasis on designing. The subject focuses on applying scientific knowledge and other disciplines to solve practical problems that address human needs and opportunities.
In 2024, the Technology department at RBAI continues to experience rapid growth. Over the past several years, the number of boys choosing to study one of the subjects offered has increased significantly, facilities have seen dramatic improvements, and results consistently exceed the NI average.
The Technology and Design Department aims to inspire and empower pupils through innovative and practical learning experiences. We aim to cultivate a dynamic environment where curiosity, creativity, and technical skills converge, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges with confidence and ingenuity. By integrating cutting-edge tools like CAD/CAM/CNC and fostering a culture of collaboration and critical thinking, we aspire to equip each pupil with the knowledge and capabilities to excel in the ever evolving technological landscape and make meaningful contributions to society.
Motivated by enthusiasm and a commitment to meeting the needs of the pupils, the Technology department at Inst was one of the first to embrace the changing curriculum. Our dedicated teachers have played a key role in promoting the subject at GCSE and A level while also introducing Occupational Studies in Engineering and Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies, offering a wider variety of options for our students.
Subjects currently offered by the Technology department include:
GCSE – Eduqas GCSE Design and Technology
GCE – Eduqas A Level Design and Technology
GCSE – CCEA MVRUS
Engineering and Engineering Services
Delivered by Belfast Metropolitan College
The department is based in the recently refurbished RBAI Centre of Innovation. The facilities include a range of specialist machines and equipment including:
Throughout Key Stage 3, the pupils will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of manufacturing processes, machines, and tools, gaining hands-on experience that sparks curiosity and creativity. They will also develop valuable skills in CAD and CAM, ensuring they are well-prepared for future studies. The entire Key Stage 3 experience is designed to be engaging and enjoyable, while laying a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that will be essential for success at GCSE and beyond.
The following projects are completed throughout Key Stage 3:
Year 8
Year 9
Year 10
At GCSE level pupils have a number of options available:
Pupils have the flexibility to choose any combination of the subjects. In recent years, these subjects have been highly sought after, with classes often oversubscribed and students consistently achieving excellent grades.
At A-Level, students can study Technology and Design, following the Edugas curriculum. See here: https://www.eduqas.co.uk/media/kclpvixc/a-level-design-and-technology-specification.pdf
