In June the Chemistry department was pleased to hold a heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools’ Analyst competition. The competition enables students to demonstrate and expand on their existing chemistry knowledge, skills and aptitude for analytical science through practical analytical experiments based on relevant societal or industrial problems.
Two teams of Year 13 students embarked on the challenge following the conclusion of their AS examinations. This year’s challenge was based around the ‘Grand Baking Competition’ and through a series of practical investigations they had to identify the saboteur of the competition! They spent around 6 hours in the lab running qualitative analysis tests, titrations, and thin layer chromatography experiments to help them solve the mystery while completing the necessary lab book of observations. Finally, they uploaded their groups results to the RSC website and we eagerly await the results to see if either team qualifies for the next round.
Well done to all those involved and thank-you to staff and technical support for their hard work in ensuring this event ran so well.
