Commerce Week Day 2

On the second day of Commerce Week, the group visited Osborne King property consultants. Here we were given a comprehensive insight into the inner workings of the property and real estate world, from small office spaces to industrial warehouses. With the oversight of senior staff such as director Chris Sweeney, we gained valuable lessons in analysing properties and deciphering legal texts to comprehensively inform clients. Furthermore, our competitive spirit was tested as we were tasked to pitch an offer for an investment portfolio in relation to several large properties across the UK. This experience gave us the opportunity to see how multifaceted this business is and the variety of skills needed to thrive and flourish within this extremely lucrative business.

Following a short walk, we visited the co-working company: Ormeau Labs. Here, under the tutelage of Clare Halliday, we were able to understand the connections between budding entrepreneurs and startups with larger business investors. These range from VR in medicine to AI supporting the maintenance of heavy industrial equipment. Likewise, this opportunity gave many of us invaluable connections to like-minded people of all walks of life and trades.

Finally, we were shown the breakdown of a joint venture between Invest NI and Ormeau Labs to release grants totalling £250,000 annually to new business ideas in an effort to grow the national economy and increase potential upscaling and exporting of Northern Ireland ideas and products.

Gaining a wide range of life lessons and taking advantage of our youth and freedom to learn from mistakes of our own but also the mistakes of others will stick with many for a long time and we will be indebted for this advice and opportunity.

In the afternoon we visited The Grand Central, where we were treated to lunch in The Observatory lounge, enjoying an array of luxurious food with amazing views. Following this, we received a talk from Howard Hastings on the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland, the owner of Hastings Hotels, which was extremely insightful and informative. This was a very special way to enjoy lunch!

A bus then brought us to the Belfast Harbour Commissioners’ Office where we listened to the experiences of employees working in all aspects of the company, including engineering and property, which provided engaging insights to a variety of roles. Overall, it was a day full of activities and discussions centred upon the world of commerce.
