In the very first Burney Cup, RBAI played Belfast Royal Academy and came out 6-1 winners. It is therefore fitting that last night when the 100th Burney Cup was played that we, RBAI, could come out 4-1 winners over Campbell College Belfast at Havelock Park.
Two goals from Man of the Match John Cunningham and strikes from Michael Hollway and Jacob McIlhatton sealed the win.
The boys dominated the match going 1 up from a penalty corner just before the end of the first quarter and scoring another 2 before halftime. The 3rd quarter saw us stretch our lead to 4 with CCB getting a well taken consolation in the final period.
This now means that our 1st XI have completed the extremely difficult task of winning both the McCullough Cup and the Burney Cup in the same season as well as defending and retaining the Burney Cup they won last year. A truly remarkable feat.
Congratulations to all the players, coaches and support staff involved in the Hockey club who deserve recognition for a remarkable season so far.
