Irish Schools' Matchplay Champions

The Senior Golf Team travelled to Portstewart to compete in the Irish Schools’ Matchplay Final. The event brings together the champions from each province to compete against each other to decide an overall winner. Josh Robinson, Darcy Hogg, Luke Kelly, Marco Deane and Captain Aaron Marshall made up the Inst team looking to improve on their 3rd place finish last year.

In the morning semi-final the team played CBS Roscommon, who were the winners last year. After 15 holes the tie could not have been closer with the first three matches all square and we were 1 down in the last two. Aaron and Josh finished strongly to win their matches. This left Luke Kelly in the 4th match needing to win, though he was 1 down after 15 holes. Luke battled hard and had the chance to win the match on the 18th green which he duly did. In the final that afternoon we played Blackrock College.

Another tight match was played to an exceptionally high standard, with Josh Robinson 5 under par after 10 holes, but only 2 up. Aaron Marshall and Darcy Hogg produced scintillating displays to win their matches 7&6 and 7&5 respectively. Marco Deane was battling hard and hit a simply amazing recovery shot on the 8th, but his putter had gone cold. Luke Kelly was 2 down at one stage, but rallied again to 2 up with 2 to play.

This meant that the race was on between Josh and Luke to see who would secure the title for the school. That honour went to Josh who had 2 putts on the 18th to win his match and the title of Irish Schools’ Matchplay Champions.
