DOUBLE GOLD FOR RBAI FENCERS

Last weekend saw the 2nd Irish Inter-Schools Team Fencing Championships take place at Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare. There were 14 teams from across Ireland taking part.

In the Under 14 event RBAI fielded 2 teams. The A team was seeded 3rd at the start and was made up of 2 year 9 pupils: Jack Woolsey (captain) and David Martin, and 1 year 8 pupil: Noah Stafford. They beat Glenstal Abbey from Limerick 45/ 26 in this first round with ease and then faced Clongowes Wood College in the semi-finals which they won 45/36 to earn their place in the final and a chance to win the championships. Here they fenced the strong Glenstal Abbey A team. However RBAI fenced superbly, scoring hits with skill and determination to overcome finals nerves and pressure. The final score was 45/33 which won them the Championship Trophy and a set of gold medals.

In the Under 16 event the RBAI team which comprised of Josh Parks (captain); Oliver Hodkinson and David Martin stormed through the first 2 rounds, beating Clongowes Wood College B twice 45/24 and 45/27 to reach the final. Here they faced last years winners, Clongowes Wood College A team. The teams were evenly matched with several fights going to time, so every hit counted as RBAI took the lead to win the Championships 41/34.

Well done to all the fencers but in particular to the two A teams for their great performances and for bringing home gold in both categories.
