Larmor entered Inst aged 12 in 1869 where he was particularly inspired by the teaching and guidance of the Headmaster of the Mathematics Department, R.C.J Nixon, excelling in mathematics and classics. At the age of 14, Larmor entered Queen’s College, Belfast, attaining his B.A at the age of 17 and his M.A a few years later.
Larmor is best known for his contributions to the theory of electromagnetism, in particular the electron theory of matter, publishing his collected papers on electromagnetism in 1900 entitled Aether and Matter. His work marked the end of an attempt to express everything in terms of Newtonian physics and led soon afterwards to the theory of relativity.
Honours and awards Larmor received in his lifetime included the Royal Society’s Royal Medal in 1915 and an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Glasgow in 1901. He was elected President of the London Mathematical Society in 1914 and received a knighthood in 1909 before also receiving the freedom of Belfast City in 1912.
Larmor died in Holywood, County Down on 19 May 1942 aged 84 with a legacy of being one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.

We hope all members of Larmor excel in the forthcoming year, be it on the sports field, the stage or in the examination hall.
