In Years 8 & 9 as part of their English homework, boys are required to read for at least 15 minutes a day, including at the weekends. We hope this will spark a lifelong love of reading in our pupils, but it also builds reading resilience in preparation for the variety of texts candidates explore at GCSE. A list of recommended reads for over the summer has been included in your information pack.
To help assess reading levels and progress we use the Accelerated Reader programme. The boys will take a Star Test in school 3 times per academic year to help monitor their reading development and identify those that might need some additional assistance. This data is also used to help inform the reading targets set for each boy.
Pupils should be reading approximately a book a month. They can choose a book from the school library or one they have at home. Once a book is finished boys should take an AR book quiz to test their reading comprehension and accuracy. To check if a book has an A.R. quiz a simple search can be done on the ‘Accelerated Reader Bookfinder’ website: https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/default.aspx .
At the start of term all the boys will be given an Accelerated Reader username and password, they will then be able to start quizzing. They will have access to Accelerated Reader through the library Google Classroom or via the link below.
If you would like to receive regular updates on your child’s progress from Accelerated Reader, then simply get them to login and follow the link highlighted below.
We look forward to your support and enthusiasm in encouraging your child to engage with ‘reading for pleasure and progress’.
