Scholarships and Exhibitions

The Scholarship & Exhibition programme rewards excellence and outstanding ability, giving our most talented academics, sportsmen and performing artists the best possible opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Whilst upholding RBAI’s traditions and ethos, recipients of Scholarships & Exhibitions also play an important role in inspiring their younger peers.

Scholarships

Each recipient receives a contribution towards their fees and a cash award, to contribute towards his participation/development in the specific area for which the Scholarship has been awarded. Please review the criteria for each award below, before downloading and completing an application form.

The Stephen Martin Elite Sports Scholarship

One Year (Either Year 13 or Year 14)

The award will cover a contribution of £500 towards school fees for one year.

The student will receive £500 towards travel for a work placement and his participation in the sport for which the Scholarship has been awarded.

The student will be eligible for a work placement, with M & C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment or a similar company in the sports marketing sector.

Eligibility

Pupils already in the Senior School, as well as those joining RBAI in Year 13, would be eligible to apply for an Award.

At time of application the student should be performing at least at Provincial Squad level with potential for Ulster and/or Ireland representative level in one of the current recognised school sports.

The Andrew Seth Junior Scholarship for Drama and Literary Achievement

Years 11 & 12

The award will cover a contribution of £400 towards school fees in Year 11 or Year 12.

The student will initially receive £200, to contribute to his involvement in drama and literacy.

The re-awarding of the Scholarship in Year 12 is subject to continued participation in school drama, literacy and maintaining academic progress.

Eligibility

Pupils already in the Junior School, as well as those joining RBAI in Year 11 or Year 12, would be eligible to apply for an Award.

Applicants will be required to provide evidence of practical performances, and potential.

Closing Date: Monday 21 October 2019, 4pm

The Andrew Seth Senior Scholarship For Drama and Literary Achievement

Years 13 & 14

The award will cover a contribution of £400 towards school fees in Year 13 or Year 14.

The student will receive £200, to contribute to his involvement in drama or literacy.

The re-awarding of the Scholarship in Year 14 is subject to continued participation in school drama, literacy and maintaining academic progress.

Eligibility

Pupils already in the Senior School, as well as those joining RBAI in Year 13 or Year 14, would be eligible to apply for an Award.

Applicants to demonstrate above average contribution and ability in practical performances and/or technical attainment.

Closing Date: Monday 21 October 2019, 4pm

The Dr Ben Wilson Scholarship for Economics & Business Studies

Years 13 and 14

A Scholarship will be awarded in Year 13.

The award will initially cover a contribution of £400 towards school fees in Year 13

The student will receive £100, to contribute to his academic studies.

The re-awarding of the Scholarship in Year 14 is subject to continued progress in Economics and/or Business Studies and participation in the Young Enterprise Award Scheme.

Eligibility

Pupils already in the Senior School, as well as those joining RBAI in Year 13, would be eligible to apply for an Award.

The best 9 GCSE grades will be considered, to demonstrate academic ability.

Either A in GCSE Business Studies or a leadership position within the Young Enterprise company.

Credit will be given to candidates who can demonstrate entrepreneurial skills and talent.

The Kilmoyangie Scholarship for Pupil Development

Years 11 and 12

A Scholarship will be awarded to the boy who can demonstrate the most significant improvement in attainment and progress during Year 10.

A Scholarship will be awarded in Year 11.

The award will initially cover school fees in Year 11.

The student will initially receive £500, to contribute to his academic studies.

The re-awarding of the Scholarship in Year 12 will be subject to satisfactory academic performance in Year 11.

Eligibility

Selection will be overseen by the Principal and Vice Principals, utilising academic assessments in Year 9 and Year 10, alongside PTiE and PTiM scores.

The recipient will also have demonstrated their commitment to the life of the School through participation in house activities, extra-curricular activities, music or sport.

Closing Date: Monday 21 October 2019, 4pm

The Professor Allen Hill Academic Admissions Scholarship

Years 8-10

The award will initially cover a contribution of £250 towards school fees in Year 8.

The students will initially receive £50, to contribute to their academic studies.

The re-awarding of the scholarship in Years 9 and 10 will be subject to the students meeting the expected standards in the annual school assessments and end of year examinations.

Eligibility

The re-awarding of the fees and student contribution will be subject to maintaining outstanding academic progress based on PTiE and PTiM scores and overall progress.

The scholarship is not open for application as it is awarded to the highest performing P7 students who have the highest AQE scores.

The Gowdy Williamson Academic Admissions Scholarship

Years 8-9

The award will initially cover a contribution of £250 towards school fees in Year 8.

The students will initially receive £50, to contribute to their academic studies.

The re-awarding of the scholarship in Year 9 will be subject to the students meeting the expected standards in the annual school assessments and end of year examinations.

Eligibility

The re-awarding of the fees and student contribution will be subject to maintaining outstanding academic progress based on PTiE and PTiM scores and overall progress.

The Scholarship is not open for application as it is awarded to the highest performing P7 students who have the highest AQE scores.

The Susan L. Gillen Senior Academic Scholarship

Years 13-14

This 2 year Scholarship will be presented on behalf of Susan L. Gillen’s sons Robert, William Tennant (RBAI 1954-61) and Sir John De Winter Gillen to the highest performing pupil;

Reading one or more of Design & Technology, English, History Latin or Music at A’ level and/or GCSE Greek.

And/or aspiring to study Drama/Theatre Studies, English, Greek, History Latin, Law or Music at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Cambridge or the University of Oxford.

Who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement at GCSE level.

Selection will be overseen by the Principal and Vice-Principals, utilising academic assessments.

The recipient will also have demonstrated their commitment to the life of the School through participation in extra-curricular activities which complement the pupil’s learning.

The Scholar will receive a bursary of £400 towards fees & a cash award of £100 in Year 13, to be re-awarded in Year 14 subject to good academic progress and attainment.

Application Process

Selection will be overseen by the Principal and Vice-Principals.

The Jonathan McCartney Technology and Engineering Scholarship

Years 13-14

This scholarship will be presented in memory of Jonathan McCartney, by his father Professor D Graham McCartney (RBAI 1966-73), to a pupil demonstrating outstanding potential in Design & Technology or BTEC Engineering.

Selection will be overseen by the Principal and Vice-Principals, utilising academic assessments.

The Scholar will be in Year 13 (2 year award) or Year 14 (1 year award) and receive a bursary of £400 towards fees & a cash award of £100. If the recipient is in Year 13, the re-award of the Scholarship in Year 14 is subject to good academic progress and attainment.

The Principal and Vice-Principals will process the assessments and their decision will be final.

The Australia Travel Scholarship

This Scholarship was awarded in 2017, and is next scheduled to be awarded in 2020.

This Scholarship will be awarded every 3 years to a pupil in Y13 to spend the summer (July & August) at the end of their penultimate year of study at RBAI. The Scholarship will consist of a 6-7 Week Programme:

2-3 week School placement organised by RBAI.

2 week work experience placement facilitated by Australian alumni.

2-3 week travel opportunity.

Objectives

Facilitate personal development through experiencing a new educational environment and different styles of learning.

Gain international work experience in an appropriate discipline in one of the world’s leading economies.

Experience living in a different culture.

Act as a School Ambassador and strengthen links with the Instonian community in Australia & New Zealand.

Selection Criteria

The recipient will have demonstrated excellent academic attainment and progress at GCSE and in the early stages of their sixth form studies.

Alongside engaging in learning, the recipient will have participated in the wider school life.

Must be willing to self-fund in-country costs.

Must be willing to attend an alumni event, and/or meet former pupils of RBAI during your visit.

Selection Process

Selection will be overseen by the Principal and Senior Leadership Team in consultation with 2-3 Australian alumni. Applicants will be required to submit a written application, with a shortlist being invited for interview.

Exhibitions

Each recipient receives a cash award, to contribute towards his participation/development in the specific area for which the Exhibition has been awarded. Please note Exhibition awards do not include a fee contribution from the School.

The Robert Howard Swimming Exhibition

The Robert Howard Swimming Exhibition - £300* per annum (Re-awarding for an additional year is subject to continued participation in the school Swimming Club and achieving at representative level).Exhibitions will be awarded, for a maximum of two years, to those students achieving representative honours, or an exceptional level of performance to be determined by the SLT, Head of PE and Games, and the appropriate Master in Charge of the Sport.*To contribute to development in the sport for which the Exhibition has been awarded. NB: The holder of a Swimming or Rugby Exhibition is not eligible to hold an Open Exhibition.

Rugby Exhibition

Rugby Exhibitions - £300* per annum This exhibition will be awarded to a student achieving representative honours or an exceptional level of performance to be determined by the SLT, Head of PE and Games, and the appropriate Master in Charge of the Sport. *To contribute to development in the sport for which the Exhibition has been awarded. NB: The holder of a Swimming or Rugby Exhibition is not eligible to hold an Open Exhibition.

Open Sport Exhibition - 2 awards, open to Year Groups 8 - 13

Open Exhibition(s) - £500* per annum (Re-awarding for an additional year is subject to continued participation in the school sporting provision, and achieving at representative level in one of the current recognised school sports).Exhibitions will be awarded, for a maximum of two years, to those students achieving representative honours, or an exceptional level of performance to be determined by the SLT, Head of PE and Games, and the appropriate Master in Charge of the Sport.*To contribute to development in the sport for which the Exhibition has been awarded. NB: The holder of a Swimming or Rugby Exhibition is not eligible to hold an Open Exhibition.

Hockey Exhibition - 2 awards

Hockey Exhibitions - £500* per annum (Re-awarding for an additional year is subject to continued participation in the school Hockey Club and achieving at representative level). The recipient will be encouraged to develop links with Instonians Hockey Club, eg. coaching.

Closing Date: Monday 21 October 2019, 4pm

Music Exhibition

Selection will be by audition. Candidates will be required to perform to at least Grade 4 standard on their chosen instrument and undertake a short sight-reading test and interview. The awardee will receive £350 per annum towards tuition fees and music related resources, for a maximum of two years. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the School Orchestra, School Choir and/or Jazz Band, and the re-awarding of the scholarship will depend on contribution to musical activities within the school.
