Duke of Edinburgh Society

At RBAI, we are committed to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the personal growth and character development of every student. The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) is a prestigious and globally recognized program that aligns perfectly with our school’s core values of Excellence, Respect, and Participation.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a personal development program that encourages young people to step out of their comfort zones and engage in a series of self-improving activities. The program is open to all students and is structured across three progressive levels: Bronze (Year 10), Silver (Year 11/12), and Gold (Year 12+). Each level demands greater commitment and perseverance, rewarding participants with a sense of accomplishment and recognition that is respected by universities and employers worldwide.

The Four Sections of the DofE Award

To achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Award, participants must complete four sections designed to stretch their abilities and broaden their horizons:

Volunteering: Boys engage in community service, embodying RBAI's value of Respect by learning the importance of giving back and understanding the impact they can have on the lives of others. Whether it's mentoring younger students, participating in environmental projects, or helping at local charities, volunteering fosters a sense of empathy and social responsibility.

Physical Activity: This section promotes a healthy lifestyle by encouraging boys to set personal fitness goals, demonstrating RBAI's commitment to Excellence in all areas of life. From team sports to individual pursuits like swimming or martial arts, the physical activity component helps students improve their health, discipline, and teamwork skills.

Skills Development: Students are encouraged to learn a new skill or develop an existing talent, reflecting RBAI's value of Participation. Whether it's playing a musical instrument, learning to cook, or mastering a new language, this section allows boys to explore their interests and gain valuable expertise that can last a lifetime.

Expeditions: Perhaps the most iconic element of the DofE Award, the expedition section challenges boys to work as a team, navigate unfamiliar terrain, and push their limits. These expeditions often become the most memorable part of the program, where students forge strong bonds with their peers while developing resilience, leadership, and problem-solving skills—key elements of the Excellence and Participation values we uphold at RBAI.

For those pursuing the Gold Award, an additional Gold Residential section requires participants to spend five days away from home with a group of peers in an unfamiliar setting, further enhancing their teamwork and independence.

Why Participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The benefits of participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award are profound and far-reaching. Here’s why our students find it so rewarding:

Personal Growth: The DofE Award encourages boys to take ownership of their development. As they progress through each level, they build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of achievement.

University and Career Prospects: The DofE Award is highly regarded by universities and employers alike. It demonstrates that our students possess the qualities that make them stand out—dedication, leadership, and the ability to overcome challenges.

Life Skills: The program equips students with practical skills that extend beyond the classroom. Time management, goal setting, teamwork, and resilience are just a few of the competencies that boys gain through the DofE Award.

Adventure and Fun: Beyond the hard work, the DofE Award is about adventure, camaraderie, and unforgettable experiences. The thrill of completing a challenging expedition or mastering a new skill is something that stays with participants long after they’ve left school.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award has inspired countless young people worldwide, including some well-known figures. Prince Harry, a Gold Award holder, has praised the program, saying, "It’s about pushing your boundaries, and it’s about testing yourself." Similarly, adventurer Bear Grylls, the UK Chief Scout, has called the award "the ultimate adventure," recognizing its role in encouraging young people to embrace life’s challenges and adventures with courage and enthusiasm.
