Tennis

Tennis is one of the major team games played in RBAI during the summer term.  There are currently six teams entered in the Ulster Tennis School competition for boys – 2 x Senior (Y13 and 14), 1 x Intermediate (Y11 and 12), 2 x Junior (Y9 and Y10) and 1 Minor (Y8).  RBAI has the most teams entering this competition compared to all other schools in Ulster.

Fixtures are played against schools all across the country in sections.   Section winners progress to the final stages of the competition in which we have had much success over the years.  Home matches are played at either Belfast Boat Club or Windsor Tennis Club ensuring the highest standard of facility is offered.  Teams are accompanied to matches with experienced staff including Miss Gray, Miss Haslett, Mr Lambe and Mr Gamble.   The boys are encouraged to play at tennis clubs to further their development and to enter tournaments outside of school in Ulster, Ireland and further afield.  A number of our pupils currently represent Ulster in their respective age groups.

Tennis Success 2017

RBAI has had an extremely successful tennis season.  The senior squad of Jakob Robb, Will Millar, Michael Darling, Tom Glover and Brett Eastwood defeated Down High, Rainey and St Michaels to reach the final of the Senior Boys Cup against defending champions Sullivan Upper.  All boys battled hard in difficult weather conditions to come through as winners in the match with a 4-1 score line.

The intermediate squad of William Hurst, Joel Carson, Josh Patterson, Cameron Johnston and Angus Adair made their way to the final of the Intermediate Boys Plate competition defeating Grosvenor 5-0 and Wallace 5-1.  They played BRA in the final edging through with a 4-2 victory.

The Year 8 squad of Will Kernohan, Dan Kernohan, Matthew Cheung, Dan Smith and Adma Draper began their competition defeating Ballymena, Carrick and Ballyclare in the group stages of the competition.  They went on to meet Bangor Grammar in the semi-finals were the match was very tight but they managed to pull through to make it into the final.  This tight match with Bangor certainly aided their preparations for the final against Killicomaine which was even closer but they fought hard till the end and emerged victorious winning 4-2.

Tennis: Congratulations to Dylan Leeman

Congratulations to Dylan Leeman who won the Tennis Ireland Under 14 National matchplays earlier this week. Dylan is only in his first year of the age group and caused an upset by beating the number one seed in the final, winning in straight sets 6-3 7-5. Dylan is currently a member of the Ulster Tennis Academy and travels to Dublin weekly as part of the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy.

His work ethic on and off the court is exemplary and this combined with his perseverance and support from an experienced coaching team means that each day he is one step closer to his dream of becoming a professional tennis player. RBAI wish Dylan well as he enters the main tournament season and competes in events all over Europe in the coming months!

Tennis Success: Under 12

Congratulations to Dylan Leeman in Year 8 on a number of recent tennis successes. Dylan competed in the Under 12 Irish National Matchplays in December following winning the Ulster event. Over the weekend he played 4 matches, winning all of them without conceding a set. During the Christmas holidays he also competed in the David Lloyd National Indoor Championships in Dublin where again he proved too strong for his fellow competitors and finished as the overall winner at U12 level making him the top player in Ireland at this level. Well done to Dylan on a very successful 2014 season!
