Badminton

Badminton is a thriving racquet sport at Inst, in recent years winning the U14 Division 2 and U16 Division 1 Ulster Schools’ League Champions and the Irish Champions at U14 and U16 levels. Matthew Lightbody was a triple winner in the Singles, Doubles and mixed tournaments at the 2012 Ulster U15 Badminton Championships.

RBAI Badminton teams celebrate success at the Ulster Schools’ Finals

Congratulations to the Minor team of Jack Livingstone, Josh Armstrong, Owen McFeely and Ben Callaghan who played their Ulster Schools League Division 1 final on Friday 4 March. They won convincingly against Friends by 5-1, qualifying for the Irish Finals on Wednesday 9 March. They also played in the Minor Schools Cup Final against Wallace High School, losing 2-4, and finishing as runners- up in the Cup competition.

Juniorteam

Well done also to the Junior team of Matthew Robb, Peter Todd, Anas Nabir and Daniel Ramsey who qualified for the Junior League Final against Royal Cavan School, losing 2-4 and finishing as runners-up in the Junior League.

Congratulations to the Senior team of Niall Armstrong, Stephen Moss, Mond Parissis and Peter McCrea who won the Ulster Schools Senior League Division 2, defeating Wallace High School in a very tightly contested match, which they drew 3-3 in games and won 7-6 on count-back to sets. As well as being the Ulster Champions, this also qualifies the team for the All Ireland Finals in Dublin on Wednesday 9 March.

Success at Irish Badminton Championships

Well done to both the Minor and Senior badminton teams who represented Ulster at the Irish Schools Championship in Dublin on Wednesday 9 March.

The Minor team of Jack Livingstone, Josh Armstrong, Owen McFeely and Ben Callaghan competed in the Division 1, U14 Final against Templeogue, Leinster. This was a very exciting, closely contested match which they drew 3-3 in games and 6-6 in sets, winning by 147-137 on count-back to points to claim the Irish U14 Championship.

The Senior team of Niall Armstrong, Stephen Moss, Mond Parissis and Panda Shuai also faced tough opposition in their U19 Final, drawing 3-3 with both Johnstown School, Leinster and Roscrea College, Munster to finish as runners up in the U19 tournament.

Badminton: Ulster Schools’ Champion of Champions competition

Congratulations to Stephen Moss, Matthew Robb and Jack Livingstone who represented the school in the annual Ulster Schools’ Champion of Champions tournament in Lisburn on Wednesday where they competed against the best Senior, Junior and Minor players in NI.

Well done to Matthew Robb for his performance in reaching the Junior Final against Royal and Prior. This was an highly exciting, closely contested match in which Matthew narrowly lost the first set 25-27, won the second 21-16, but was finally defeated 21-14 in the third and deciding set, finishing as Ulster Schools Champion of Champions Junior runner up. Congratulations on an excellent performance in this prestigious tournament, Matthew.

U19 Badminton team triumph at Irish Championships

At the annual All Ireland Badminton Championships in Dublin on Wednesday 25th March, the RBAI Senior team triumphed to conclude an outstanding season as Irish U19 Champions in their division.

The U19 team of Niall Armstrong, Stephen Moss, Philip Moneypenny and Conor Beattie defeated Leinster 4-2 and drew 3-3 with Munster, winning 154-133 on points before finishing their season in style with a 6-0 win over Connacht to claim the Irish Senior Championship.

Many congratulations to the team on their remarkable success and the fantastic achievement of winning both the Ulster and Irish Championships!
