A History of the RBAI Rugby Club

Rugby has been played formally at Inst since 1872, although it is likely that a form of rugby football was played at school even before that. Inst’s first match was against North of Ireland Football Club in 1872 and for many years opposition was supplied mostly by clubs like North, Queens, Windsor and Albion.

The Ulster Schools’ Cup was introduced in 1876 and the first ever Cup match was played between Inst and Methodist College. Inst won that match but lost in the final to R S Armagh after two replays. Overall Inst have reached 53 finals, winning the Cup 29 times and sharing it on 4 occasions. The Medallion competition was introduced in1910 and Inst have competed in 49 finals, winning 32 times and sharing the trophy on 3 occasions.

On the school’s representative front records show that 315 boys from Inst have played for Ulster Schools since1888, the year that School’s Inter-Provincial rugby started. International School’s rugby was introduced in the 1975-76 season and 38 boys from Inst have played for Irish schools, as well as 3 boys playing for Ireland Under 19 while still at school.

Most notably Inst is Ireland’s leading school in the production of senior International players and British and Irish Lions. To date Inst has produced 85 Internationals and 13 Lions, 2 of whom were captains, Sammy Walker in 1938 and Robin Thompson in 1955. Many will be familiar with the Hewitt and McKibbin families who produced several Internationals and other notables include Ronnie Lamont, David Irwin and Keith Crossan. The School’s most recent “cap” is Ryan Caldwell.

In rugby administration 20 former pupils have been President of the Ulster Branch and 10 have been President of the IRFU.
