Commerce Week: Day 3

Day three of Commerce Week started at Danske Bank where we were given the unique opportunity to learn more about the modern banking industry through a range of presentations, outlining the bank’s core responsibilities in relation to society, customers, employees and the environment.

Firstly, we were given a talk about the diverse range of jobs which Danske Bank offer to run effectively and efficiently. This ranges from Personal Bankers to Economists and even an Agribusiness Manager. Next, we learned about cyber security and its threat in contemporary society. It was really interesting to learn about the different forms in which scams can occur. We were even advised about how we can take steps to avoid being a victim of cyber fraud and learned about how to help protect our bank details online.

Finally, we heard from Danske Bank’s marketing department who showed us how they advertise their business through a range of social media platforms and sponsorships in order to achieve their aim to be the “best bank in Northern Ireland.” We learnt Danske Bank use social media to analyse peak times people spend online to help target and successfully attract specific audiences. They even create hashtags to help successfully get their brand name out.

Many thanks to everyone at Danske Bank for the highly informative morning which gave us an exclusive insight into the diverse world of contemporary banking.

After lunch, we took the short walk to Osborne King, a company specialising in commercial property consultancy. As a quick immersion in the industry, we were presented with a team task; we were split into two teams and given a series of brochures showing potential large scale investments, and after an hour we gave a presentation on how we would invest a client’s £50,000,000 in the best possible way, using the range of information available on the brochures.

This task was exceptionally useful as it gave us all an insight into the work Osborne King do on a daily basis, simultaneously providing us the opportunity to improve our presentational skills and broaden our understanding of the commercial real estate industry. Further, it gave us all another option for our career paths.

Our trip to Osborne King finished with a tour around the building and offices to show us the workplace environment. Many thanks to Gavin Clarke and the rest of the Osborne King team who gave up their time to give us this unique and highly interesting experience!
